First of all, thank you very much for visiting our blog. This blog is meant to give a very broad and general overview of vfx for people who are new to vfx or want to know more about other areas. If you work in the film industry as a director, producer, cinematographer, etc …. , and you want to be more competent working with vfx, this blog is also for you.
This blog is written by LightRay FX’s artists who specialized in all different areas of visual effects. Visual effects is not just making robots, explosions, aliens and space ships. Visual effects is a tool to help you complete the films and tell the stories without limitation. Visual effects is not an expensive luxury for only big budget films. In a lot of situations, you might find working with vfx will save you time and money.
Many filmmakers think the visual effects department has some magical things going on. A lot of people think “I watch some behind the scene, you guys just push a few buttons. How hard can this be? Aren’t nowadays the computers so powerful that they do all the work?”. And then you have no idea why sometimes you think something is so easy but they tell you this will be hard and charge you an arm and a leg. So, in order to help you work better with the vfx team and be able to apply vfx as a tool for your film making, this blog will include a few categories as follow:
1. The concept of VFX: In this category, we talk about what is visual effects and what visual effects do. We also include some explanation about some vfx technique. Through those posts, you will get a basic idea of what vfx can do for you and get some ideas of how vfx can support your story. We also talk about the process of working with vfx team so you can understand the workflow.
2. Benefits of VFX: In this category, we talk about several situations that vfx could help you achieve your goal easier, cheaper or better. So if your film is in that situation, you might want to talk to a vfx professional to find out how they can save you time and money.
3. “How to” of VFX: We talk about more practical hands-on subjects here. Some of the posts are about what you might have to do during production. This will help you have a smoother post-production with your vfx team. There are also posts about during post production, how and what the vfx team will do. Those posts are not going to be very technical, but they will give you a concept about how things are done. These also will give you some sense about what will be difficult, expensive or time consuming. So when you are planning your schedule and budget (if you don’t have a vfx consultant or vfx producer on board), you can be more accurate and have less unpleasant surprises.
4. Case study: We share our experiences and break down some projects here. We hope this can give you some inspiration and also a better understanding of what could be done in VFX and why.
